Who Run The World? Girls!

"Babae ka, hindi babae lang." A simple statement yet a powerful one. It encourages us, women, to be empowered. To recognize our strength as a woman. March is the celebration of the National Women's Month with the theme WE for gender equality and inclusive society." This month is a time for each and every one of us to recognize and appreciate women. A time to commemorate the contribution of women to events in history and the society. The Proclamation No. 224 s. 1988Proclamation No, 227 s. 1988, together with the R.A. 6949 s. 1990 serve as legal basis for the said celebration.

As a woman, have you ever felt wronged by our society? The world we live in is ruled by the patriarchy. We live in a society wherein men are the one in charge. We are living in a world where everything is up to men's likings. People have always believed that men are suppose to go out and explore the world, while women are expected to stay inside their home, doing household chores and taking care of the children. They believe that women are weak and that men are superior to us. That belief is nothing but a baseless, incorrect, and absurd statement.

A great amount of women from the past, even at present, have great contributions in the society. Take it for example the famous, Mary Wollstonecraft. She is a writer and a famous activist for women. She  bridged the gap between men and women. Her famous work called "A Vindication of the Rights of Women" talks about the importance of having equal rights for both sex. She strongly believed that if women are given the same opportunity and advantage as men, women will also pave the way. We will no longer be just housewives and mothers, but rather, strong and independent figures who are capable workers in many professions. To summarize, she thinks that women are expected to do less, which that's why we aren't given much opportunity that we most certainly deserve.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, 17.5% of Filipino women from 15-49 years of age have experienced any form of physical, sexual, and emotional violence from their partners. There were 8,399 reported cases of physical violence, 1,791 on rape, and 1,505 on acts of lasciviousness in the year 2021. There are many evidences of the oppression and violence that women receive. It is quite alarming that innocent women are tortured and in worse cases, killed, due to people's belief that we are of such an object that they own. We must put an end to this.

However, there are laws and regulations aimed at protecting women and their children. This includes the Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004, which according to it,  is “any act or a series of acts committed by any person against a woman who is his wife, former wife, or against a woman with whom the person has or had a sexual or dating relationship, or with whom he has a common child, or against her child whether legitimate or illegitimate, with or without the family abode, which result in or is likely to result in physical, sexual, psychological harm or suffering, or economic abuse including threats of such acts, battery, assault, coercion, harassment or arbitrary deprivation of liberty.” The government are doing great efforts to ensure an equal and inclusive society. As citizens, we must recognize and protect them at all cost.

In summary, National Women's Month is an important reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality and the importance of highlighting the contributions made by women to society. Issues like gender-based violence continue to exist despite improvements in awareness and laws, highlighting the need for advocacy and solidarity. A more inclusive and equitable future for all genders can be achieved by challenging embedded stereotypes, recognizing the injustices experienced by women, and supporting initiatives that advance equality. Let's keep working toward a society in which every person, whether it be male or female, can thrive and make a meaningful contribution to society to the best of their abilities.
