She Who Holds Us Close
In Filipino households, our mother isn't only the person who gave birth to us. She is our mentor, cheerleader, number on supporter, and our guiding light. It is she who wakes up before everyone else to prepare breakfast, tirelessly works to put food on the table, and stays up late nights mending clothes and offering words of encouragement. Her love is like no other, her sacrifices are countless, and her presence is our source of strength.
Flowers and gift cards are Western methods of celebrating Mother's Day. In the Philippines, it is a day where families come together. Siblings from different parts of the world or country all unite in one place to show their love and appreciation for their mothers. Filipinos prepare special meals for their mothers, expressing their gratitude. Knowing Filipinos, it is expected that there will be a big feast. And the most important part is when each family member share stories and memories. Here, they reminisce about cherished moments, which can strengthen the bonds of a family. And for families who live abroad, video calls and video greeting are to be expected. Distance holds nothing against family.
